Areas of Expertise

  • Teaches courses on English language arts (ELA) methods, writing, Young Adult (YA) literature and content-area literacy. Content-area literacy helps children to comprehend, analyze and use texts for disciplinary learning in all subjects, including English, math and science, and social studies.
  • Spent 20 years as a public school English language arts teacher before becoming a professor. Now, Lewis consults with the Departments of Education in Georgia and Delaware on best practices in literacy instruction.
  • Research focuses on persuasive writing and argumentation and how to choose and use texts for disciplinary learning.
  • Co-author of the books Literacy Instruction with Disciplinary Texts: Strategies for Grades 6-12 and Cracking the Common Core: Choosing and Using Texts in Grades 6-12.
