- Research focuses on counterfactual thinking, i.e. thoughts about the option that was not chosen, the "what if." Sivaraman's work digs into how this thinking can be used for understanding consumption patterns and changing patterns.
- Teaches courses on marketing research and IT applications in marketing. Has taught classes on the use of blogs in marketing.
- Named a top marketing professor on Twitter by Social Media Marketing Magazine.
- Other areas of interest include information processing and behavioral decision theory.
