- Research focuses primarily on remote sensing of the environment, including the use of satellites. Investigates coastal ecosystems and processes: wetland health, pollution of estuaries, coastal dynamics and global change.
- Has consulted for UNESCO, NASA, NOAA, U.S. Geological Survey and foreign governments.
- Member of five National Academy of Science advisory panels.
- Currently writing a book on global change.
